DFG approves third funding period of CRC/TRR 225 “From the Fundamentals of Biofabrication towards Functional Tissue Models”
We are delighted to announce that on 21 November 2025, the German Research Foundation (DFG) decided to fund the Collaborative Research Centre/Transregio 225 for an additional four years.
The aim of CRC/TRR 225 is to develop innovative biofabrication strategies, particularly automated 3D printing technologies that enable the processing of living cells and biomaterials into complex tissue constructs. These models open up new opportunities in pharmaceutical, cancer, and infection research, support the reduction of animal testing and offer long-term perspectives for regenerative medicine.
Since its establishment in 2018, the consortium has achieved significant scientific success: more than 360 publications, thirteen patent applications, and a successfully growing spin-off highlight the international visibility and impact of the research activities. In the third funding period (2026–2029), the focus will be on further optimizing the maturation processes of 3D-printed tissues, with particular emphasis on models of the central nervous system and applications in infection research.
The renewal of TRR 225 not only reflects the excellent interdisciplinary collaboration and scientific excellence of the participating universities, but also strengthens the visibility of Northern Bavaria as an internationally significant site for biofabrication and cutting-edge medical technologies.
