On 21-25 January 2019 Professor Aldo R. Boccaccini (Head, Institute of Biomaterials, and Chair, FAU Department of Materials Science and Engineering), and Professor Thomas Scheibel (Head, Department for Biomaterials, University of Bayreuth, Institute of Biomaterials, and Chair, FAU Department of Materials Science and Engineering) hosted a delegation of students from the School of Engineering, University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, with sponsorship of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) .

Sixteen students of different engineering disciplines took part in this study trip, coordinated by Prof. Ing. Jorge N. Zanabria. The main theme of this study trip was “Biofabrication and 3D Printing in Medicine”. The students attended presentations of members of the FAU and Bayreuth Institutes of Biomaterials and also carried out experiments in our cell culture and biofabrication laboratories. The program included also presentations of Ms Marina Rupprecht of the Bavarian University Centre for Latin America https://www.baylat.org/index.php?id=2 and by Ms Claudia Barnickel from the FAU course Medical Engineering https://www.medical-engineering.study.fau.eu/.

The students benefited from academic presentations by Dr. R. Detsch, Mr Supachai Reakasame (PhD student), Dr. Aldo-Leal-Egana and Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini in Erlangen as well as by Prof. Leonid Ionov, Prof. Gregor Lang, Dr. Hendrik Bargel (from the UBT Master Program Biofabrication) and Prof. Thomas Scheibel in Bayreuth.

At lunch the provost of the University of Bayreuth – Dr. Markus Zanner took time for intensive discussions with the visiting students.

Discussions and laboratory demonstration were organized with PhD students Susanne Heid, Jonas Hazur, Emine Karakaya, and Vera Bednarzig in Erlangen.

The visit was linked to our biofabricaton projects in the framework of the Collaborative Research Centre SFB/TRR 225 “From the fundamentals of biofabrication towards functional tissue models”.
